The NBVME examinations include:
North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE®)
The NAVLE is a 360 item computer based multiple choice examination, administered during two testing windows per year. The NAVLE is a requirement for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in all licensing jurisdictions in North America. The NAVLE replaced both the National Board Examination (NBE) and the Clinical Competency Test (CCT), beginning in November 2000. For additional information refer to the NAVLE section of this site.
Qualifying Examination (QE)
The QE is a computer based basic science examination developed for use by the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). The QE was offered for the first time in August 2002 and will be administered for the last time as the PAVE step 3 examination in May 2014. The QE is also administered by accredited veterinary schools as an outside assessment of basic science knowledge. For additional information refer to the QE section of this site.
Veterinary Clinical Skills Assessment (VCSA)
The VCSA is a two day hands on practical examination, developed for use in the PAVE program to evaluate clinical and communication skills of graduates of non-accredited veterinary colleges. The VCSA was offered for the first time in October 2005. For additional information refer to the VCSA section of this site.
Species Specific Examinations
The Species Specific Examinations in companion animal and equine medicine each consist of 100 multiple choice questions. They have been offered to licensing boards for use in disciplinary cases and for other purposes since 1997. For additional information refer to the Species Specific Exams section of this site.
Previously Administered Examinations
- National Board Examination (NBE)
The NBE, a 400 item multiple choice examination, was introduced in 1954, and was administered for the last time on April 11, 2000. For more information on the NBE, contact the NBVME office.
- Clinical Competency Test (CCT)
The CCT, a 14 problem case-based examination, was introduced in 1979, and was administered for the last time on April 12, 2000. For more information on the CCT, contact the NBVME office.
