Important: All NAVLE candidates must be approved by a licensing board to take the examination. The preferences in the chart below apply only to the NBVME NAVLE application, not the licensing board application for approval to take the NAVLE. Therefore even if your licensing board prefers that you submit your NAVLE application directly to the NBVME, you must also do whatever that board requires for them to approve you to take the NAVLE. Typically, this requires submitting a board-specific application and paying an application fee to the licensing board.

Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Virginia: Candidates applying through these states are approved directly by the NBVME office. For application forms and instructions, visit this page.
Apply to NBVME: Candidates applying through these licensing boards can mail their NBVME NAVLE application directly to the NBVME office (P.O. Box 1356, Bismarck, ND 58502), or apply on-line. The NAVLE application receipt deadline is August 1 for the November-December testing window and January 3 for the April window.
Pay NBVME directly: Candidates should include with their NAVLE application a personal check, cashier's check, certified check, or money order payable to NBVME for the $525 NAVLE fee, or apply on-line and pay by credit card.
Submit through board: Candidates applying through these licensing boards should submit their NAVLE application form to the licensing board. The board will then forward the NAVLE applications to the NBVME office. Candidates must meet whatever application deadline is set by the individual licensing board.
Submit check through board: Candidates should submit a personal check, cashier's check, certified check, or money order for $525, payable to NBVME, to the board along with their NAVLE application form. The board will then forward the checks to the NBVME office.
Canadian candidates: Candidates applying through the National Examining Board (NEB) of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association should apply for the NAVLE and pay the NAVLE fee directly to the NEB. Contact the NEB office for more detailed information, tel. 613-236-1162 ext 116.
